Idea to launch 4G volte phone for Rs 2500/-
Aditya Birla group owned Idea cellular. Announced that they are planning to launch 4G volte feature phone for the Indian market. For an as affordable price as Rs 2500/-. The Company announced their plan in an interaction with Market analysts.
Idea cellular is targeting Reliance’s Jiophone which is priced at more less at Rs 1500/-. Jiophone is also providing a buyback on their phone after 3 years. It also offers 4G LTE connectivity with VoLTE support and access to TV, music, movies and other Jio apps. Which means Competition is really tough in the feature phone section.
Himanshu Kapania, Managing Director Idea Cellular said,“The practical solution that we are working on is to work with the handset industry and work with them to be able to bring down cost of handsets by bringing down the bill of material, so that the gap of the announced price of Jio feature phone versus a smartphone can be brought down to reasonable levels.”
Point to note, The JioPhone doesn’t have a dual Sim mode and it is expected to run on current Jio network which is only 4G. That means it would not work in a place which doesn’t have 4G networks. Idea’s offering is expected to support dual SIM and be compatible with 2G and 4G networks as well. Which gives them an advantage over the Jiophone.
Mr. Kapania further explained,“While we have no intention-subsidized Its handsets, both handset manufacturers and telecom operators need each other to make sure that the offering to the consumer is strong enough when you have to make a choice between a bundle offer and telecom operator with a locked handset.”
Idea and Vodafone have launched similar plans worth Rs 244/- which provide free calls plus 1Gb 4G data to customers for 28-35 days.
Side by side Airtel is working on bringing 4G volte network by March 2018.
