HMD Global led Nokia is in talks with various telecom operators in India to provide a 4G featured phone. The Jio is pushing the race towards a 4G featured phone with ts Jio Phone. This has led to companies like Lava, Intex, Idea and Airtel working towards a 4G featured phone with reducing all the costs by not including all the features that come with the chip set. Enabling them to produce low cost featured phone which support 4G VoLTE.
“Feature phone is a critical category… and we see operators as a partner here. There is sizable volume in this segment, roughly 10 million devices monthly. Nokia has traditionally been strong here, and there is huge opportunity.”
-India VP for HMD Global, Ajey Mehta, told the Times of India
According to a report in TeleAnalysis when Ajey Mehta was asked about company’s plans for more featured phone like the 3310 he commented “4G feature phones are a critical part of our strategy.”
By the way for those who are wondering, the Nokia 3310 is not 4G enabled. It’s a 3G only phone with WiFi and other methods to access internet.
HMD Global plans to resurrect the Nokia name as one of the top smartphone manufactures in the country by the end of three to five years. The company recently launched the Nokia 8 with a good build quality and great camera priced at 39,999. It has phones in the mid segment such as Nokia 6 too.
